19th February

The filming was very successful because we were able to get extra footage. For example, different angles of the Detective pouring a drink. The use of the extra footage will be beneficial for cut-ins and a wider use of angles, as well as creating tension and in this case, it will emphasise the Detective's alcoholic flaw. Moreover, even though we had planned to film in a forest, we decided to film in an alleyway. This group decision was made because of the weather, the props and the excess, in the way that it was easier for my Uncle to enter this location than the forest. Also, the practical space in the alleyway worked better for the props as we could draw a chalk outline of a body and have more space for our resources, whilst creating a similar tone. We are slightly behind schedule because of the previous issues, however, at least we can now focus on the editing stage of the production cycle.

Luckily, St Mary’s Willoughby Waterleys has agreed to allowing us to film in their Church, which is great considering that we no longer have to think of alternate ideas or locations. Therefore, this means that our production is moving on steadily but successfully, now we have to complete the script and continue to search for locations for the other scenes in our Film trailer. We are aware that we face challenges in the location scouting and prop hunting, so we will try to be as organised as possible to keep the production cycle flowing as effective as possible.

Unfortunately, St Mary's Church Broughton Astley has not confirmed our filming, because of the concerns with the subject matter and accepting the shooting without further consultation.

Unfortunately, we have found out that we are unable to film at the local church, because of understandable concerns on behalf of the Parish Church Council. Therefore, we face a challenge to search for other locations, preferably Church's (so that we do not need to change our ideas.) We will attain research by visiting local Church's and asking whether it would be a possibility to film there. Our main aim is to have some shots before Christmas so this process will be short and quick.

Currently, our research is going quite well, but I think that it is necessary that we continue to link the research to our production for a greater effect. Yesterday, we put the focus group on Final Cut Pro for editing, but it is taking a while to load and transfigure all of the configurations and what it needs to so that it can be as clean and effective as possible. I have spoken to my Uncle, and he is prepared to be involved with our production in the form of the Detective. His acting experience in Amateur productions and previous short films means that he is a great actor, suitable for this role. We are continuing to look for locations, and we are planning on writing an email for St Andrews Church, Countesthorpe after half term so that we can be 100% certain whether we can film there or not. Hopefully we will get permission, but if not this will be one of the main challenges for our production because of the old fashioned mise-en-scene of Film Noir and our lack of awareness, money and time for big locations. Lastly, we have completed the first survey, but the responses are coming back slowly, so this is preventing our progress on this in particular.

After completing research on how to develop our understanding and ideas, I have found some pro tips for creating inspirational mood boards and research into this film genre, in order to develop our practicality:
  1. Take pictures when I am out on my phone of everything that suddenly inspires me, or reminds me of Film Noir. For example, typography or a certain texture of a building.
  2. Do not lock down a firm idea, as they will easily develop through the course and the process.
  3. Use text to allow the audience to consider what is in front of them, whilst big and bold words juxtaposed worked successfully in achieving tone and meaning.
  4. Make the themes obvious, especially the main motif and theme.

26th September 2016

Unfortunately, today we lost a valuable member of the group: William Guy, because he has decided to continue his education elsewhere. This will obviously mean a challenge on behalf of our research and planning because we will have more work to do and less brains to consider improvements. Not only at these stages of the production cycle, but during the production and post-production Will is a gifted camera operator and he is well aware with Final Cut and how to edit effectively.  We will lose his ability that certainly increased our end product, but we are determined to learn and experiment in order to achieve a clean and conventional trailer.

On behalf on the Green Box team,

Good luck and all the best.

Even though we have decided to create a Film Noir, due to the all of the conventions that would be very difficult to follow, such as: Femme Fatale or use of blinds we are considering to include horror as a sub-genre, creating a hybrid trailer. This will be seen through a monster replacing the conventional murderer in Film Noir, and the climatic effects and silhouettes will replace the use of blinds. As a result, I think that these replacements will be effective in preventing a very intense challenge that would take a miracle and a very long process to achieve. For this reason, I actually believe that this will be even more positive because it will increase the audience attraction and begin to create modernism within this style (for a Neo-Noir look and feel.)

30.6.16 Teacher feedback

Both of our current Media Teachers provided the entire class with feedback for a blog. Therefore, from an audience perspective I was set targets: to alter my Welcome post because they're some slight word errors, there is an error with the film noir trailers and the Response to the Brief could be developed through images. Therefore, I will improve these weaknesses as soon as possible. Furthermore, we are prepared to produce visual recorded production logs when we have any changes or developments to our production and evaluations to complete, such as: once we have completed the textual analysis research we will evaluate what we have learnt and how we will include this through a video.
